I am sad to learn of the passing of Mrs. De Witt. She was always very gracious to me. Mark, her son, was a good friend, and when he died so tragically in 1970, I was not able to make it back to Michigan for the funeral. In the years that followed, I visited Mrs. De Witt at her home on Pine Court. She helped me feel closure and, in spite of her devastating loss, was able to express to me her appreciation for several poems and letters, penned by Mark, which I gave to her. What a nice family!

I've had the pleasure of growing up on Pine Ct with the Dewitt's . Norm and Inez spent many years traveling abroad with my parents Sandy and Bill Whittaker. Lots of laughs for many years! They were such kind people and always willing to help in time of need. No more pain, now she will heal and join her husband and son. I wish the family much peace knowing she's with God!

I've known Mrs. DeWitt since I was 5, when my family moved in next door. Kay and I became fast friends, and I've shared many a meal at Mrs. DeWitt's table over the years. She cooked up exotic delicacies like "baked apples" and "Swiss steak," so unlike anything my Hungarian mother made for us. (Kay came to our house for chicken paprikas and cabbage rolls.)

My mother remained in the house long after I moved out, and it was my great privilege to get to know Mrs. DeWitt as I became an adult. Both she and Mr. DeWitt were so supportive when my mother, newly divorced and pennyless, wanted to turn her home into an adult foster care home. The DeWitts remained friends and good neighbors for all these years.

I'll think of you every time I make your apple crisp recipe, Mrs. DeWitt!
