Dave Klaassen

Dave Klaassen

Owner and Director

Dave Klaassen was born and raised in Grand Haven and has lived his entire life there. He attended Grand Haven Christian School and graduated from Grand Haven High School and Wisconsin Institute of Mortuary Science. He was recently awarded his 50 year certificate in funeral service. Dave is married to the former Sandra Wierengo and have three grown children and 7 grandchildren. Dave and Sandy are members of Second Christian Reformed Church. He is past president of Chamber of Commerce, North Ottawa Council on Aging, Salvation Army Advisory Board and Kiwanis Club. He served the city of Grand Haven as city councilman and Mayor Pro-Tem, past president of the U.S. Coast Guard Festival. He has been involved in the community for some 50 years and was selected for the Jaycee Distinguished Service Award in 1976. Dave is thankful to God for this new opportunity to have a family operated funeral home that will be of service to the entire Tri-Cities area.

Kurt Klaassen

Kurt Klaassen

Owner and Managing Director

Kurt Klaassen was born and raised in Grand Haven and graduated from Grand Haven High School in 1987. He attended Ferris State University and went on to Cypress College in California where he received an associate's degree in Mortuary Science. Kurt is a member of the Grand Haven Rotary, Past President of MFDA District 4 and a current member of the Michigan Mortuary Response Team, trained to respond and assist local medical examiners and emergency management agencies in identifying and returning human remains to their family following a mass fatality incident.

In addition to his funeral service work, Kurt and his family are members of Hope Reformed Church of Grand Haven. He enjoys playing softball, hockey, skiing, boating, fishing, water sports and spending time with family and friends. 
Kurt feels fortunate to work and live in the town he grew up in surrounded by family and friends and is grateful for the opportunity to serve the families of the Tri-Cities Area.

Kurt and his wife Jennifer have two children; Jordan and Lauren.

Scott Klaassen

Scott Klaassen

Owner and Director

Scott Klaassen was born and raised in Grand Haven, attended Grand Haven Christian School and graduated from Grand Haven High School in 1982. He attended Northwestern Michigan College in Traverse City, and received his Mortuary Science degree from the College of Boca Raton, Florida in 1986. 

Scott attends Hope Reformed Church in Grand Haven and has two daughters; Ashley who is attending college & Hanna, who attends Western Michigan Christian High School in Muskegon. Both girls graduated from Grand Haven Christian, and are involved in church and school activities.  

Scott is very active in the Tri-Cities community through many volunteer efforts. He currently holds the position of Chairman of the Board of Directors for the  2016 Coast Guard Festival  and has volunteered with the Grand Haven Coast Guard Festival for more than 30 years. The annual festival  draws hundreds of thousands of people to the Tri-Cities each summer.  He also serves on the Salvation Army's Capital Campaign Cabinet and has volunteered for the Worship on the Waterfront, The People Center, and the Mulligan's Hollow Ski Bowl. He is a past member of the former  Grand Haven Area Jaycees, The Ottawa Co. United Way, and the Grand Haven Christian School Board. Scott also holds a Real Estate License in the State of Michigan with Coldwell Banker Woodland Schmidt.

Scott , Kathy, and the girls enjoy traveling,  boating, camping, sunsets at the beach, walking on the Boardwalk, and snow skiing, as well as traveling about the state on his Harley Davidson Electra Glide.

Beth Ferris

Beth Ferris

Administrative Assistant

Beth Ferris is an Office Assistant at Klaassen Family Funeral Home. She graduated from Grand Valley with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education. She retired from Spring Lake Public Schools after 24 years of teaching. 

Beth and her husband, Randy, have four children in their blended family; Will, Lauren, Lauren Ann and Patrick. As empty nesters they have enjoyed traveling, dining out and home improvement projects. Beth and Randy serve on the Helen DeVos Children's Hospital Family Service Council.

Although Beth misses the hugs from her students, her role at Klaassen Family Funeral Home allows her the opportunity to provide comfort and support to families at an extremely emotional time in their lives.

Simone Young

Simone Young

Administrative Assistant

Simone Young is an Office Assistant at Klaassen Family Funeral Home. She grew up in Los Gatos, California and earned her associate's degree at Heald Business College. Prior to relocating to Grand Haven, Simone worked as an Administrative Assistant to the President of Sales/Marketing and Engineering at a small business in California. 

Simone and her husband Philip have one son, Maximilian, who is currently a student at Michigan State. They also have two dogs, Stuey and Chaos who keep them quite active.

Simone enjoys taking care of her family and in her leisure time enjoys working in the yard, home improvement projects and reading. Simone and Philip have recently taken to the road sightseeing on their new Indian Motorcycle.

Simone enjoys meeting with families, creating DVD memorial tributes and executing the duties of the front office.

Sandra (Wierengo) Klaassen is a graduate of West Michigan Christian High School. She married Dave following his graduation from Mortuary College 53 years ago and has been involved in funeral service since. They raised their 3 children Scott, Kurt, and Tammy while living upstairs in three different funeral homes.

 Sandy has been involved with the North Ottawa Hospital Auxiliary, Grand Haven Christian School Auxiliary and served as a Sunday school teacher at Second Christian Reformed Church. She was a member of the Christian Women's Club, Jaycee Auxiliary, Grand Haven Coast Guard Festival Board and for many years served as the chaperone to Miss Coast Guard. Sandy has attended many National Funeral Directors Association conferences as well as conferences on the state level. Sandy took pleasure in her job as a travel agent for several years and enjoys being a member of The Birthday Club. She continues to support sports and music programs throughout the area by attending events her 7 grandchildren participate in. She feels her most important role is being a supportive wife, mother and grandmother.

 Sandy and Dave spend a few of Michigan’s colder months enjoying the warmth of sunny Florida. Sandy hangs tight to "God is good all the time. All the time God is good."



Jordan Klaassen

Funeral Assistant

Jordan Klaassen is the son of Jennifer and Kurt Klaassen. Jordan graduated from Grand Haven High School in 2013 and is presently attending Oklahoma State University pursuing a degree in Mechanical Technology Engineering.

Jordan assists during funerals, visitations and is responsible for the care of the grounds and building maintenance. This past summer Jordan interned at Automatic Spring Products Corp. and the summer prior to that worked for the City of Grand Haven. We are fortunate to have such an eager young man willing to be part of the team.

Jordan enjoys spending time with his family and friends boating, camping and playing on Lake Michigan.


Greg Watters

Greg Watters

Funeral Assistant

Greg Watters grew up in the Tri-Cities area and graduated from Spring Lake High School. He is a veteran of the US Army and a graduate of Grand Valley State University and Davenport University. 

Greg and his wife, Renate raised three children, Jessica (Andy) Kempf, Gina Watters and Alexander Watters. They enjoy spending time with them and their two grandchildren, Halie and Brice. 

Greg was a firefighter for the Robinson Township Fire Department from 1976-2008, retiring as Deputy Chief. He has served the people of the Tri-Cities as a paramedic with NOCHS from 1984-2011, volunteer at the YMCA as a teacher of the cardiac rehab phase 3 classes and Harbor Humane Society. He is a member of the American Legion Charles A Conklin Post #28, the Knights of Columbus #13865, and AMVETS. Greg and his wife are members of St.Patrick-St. Anthony Parish in Grand Haven.

Greg is an avid outdoorsman who enjoys biking, hiking, and kayaking. His duities at Klaassen Family Funeral Home include assisting the directors during visitations and funerals.


Rodger McKay

Rodger McKay

Funeral Assistant

Rodger McKay was born and raised in Grand Haven and is a graduate of Grand Haven High School. He is a veteran of the United States Air Force and a former employee of North Ottawa Community Hospital where he worked for 33 years. 

Rodger has worked for Klaassen Family Funeral Home since 2009. His duties include working visitations and services as well as assisting with maintenance around the funeral home. 

In his leisure time Rodger enjoys riding his Harley, wood working, and gardening. He volunteers at North Ottawa Community Hospital with valet parking. 

Rodger and his wife Judi raised five children, Holly, Kevin, Melodie, Ken and Mary. They are active members at Spring Lake Wesleyan Church.


Dan Scanlan

Dan Scanlan

Funeral Assistant

Dan Scanlan and his wife Carol are originally from Iowa and moved to Grand Haven with their two daughters, Stacey and Nicole (Tim) Tiefenbach when Dan was hired as principal of Griffin Elementary. He retired as principal of Peach Plains Elementary in 2008. 

Dan is a member of the Coast Guard Festival Committee, First Presbyterian Church and devotes his time during the holiday season to the Crusade for Toys drive sponsored by The American Legion. 

Dan's familiar face brings comfort to many families he's had the pleasure of working with through the school system during visitations and funerals. 

In his leisure time Dan enjoys playing golf, especially in his "unofficial" Tuesday Men's League and sharing the newest photos of his granddaughter, Finnley.

Linda Mieras

Linda Mieras

Linda (Schroeder) Mieras was born and raised in Grand Haven. After graduating from Grand Haven High School she worked for Sears Roebuck & Co. for 12 years. Linda retired from D&W Food Centers after 26 years of service. 

When Linda is not working a visitation for Klaassen Family Funeral Home, she enjoys walking along the waterfront, baking and spending time with her grandchildren. Linda married Ray Mieras after the death of her husband, Wally Schroeder.

Linda has two daughters, Paula (Mark) Bekins and Lisa (Dan) Luckey and one step daughter, Kimberly Zevalkink. Linda and her husband are members of Hope Reformed Church. She is involved with Brown Bag Lunch Group, DeColores and The American Legion.


Bill Richmond

Funeral Assistant

Bill grew up and attended Grandville High School as well as Ferris and Davenport Colleges.

He married his high school sweetheart, Sharon Osterink, in 1967 and together have three children, Traci, Brenda and Dennis, eight grandchildren, one great-grandchild and another due in 2016.

Attends Second Reformed Church in Grand Haven and over 26 years has served as both Deacon and Elder.

Bill worked in sales for Oven Fresh Bakery for 29 years and then managed Save-A-Lot food stores for 13 years, before retiring in 2014.

Bill is a volunteer for the Salvation Army of Grand Haven and enjoys bowling, golfing and rooting for the University of Michigan and the Detroit Tigers, Pistons, Lions and Red Wings sport teams.

His duties with Klaassen Family Funeral Home are assisting with visitations and funerals.


Marge VanLente

Marge VanLente grew up in Petoskey, Michigan. She and her husband, Gregg have two children, Scott (Holly) VanLente and Jill (Rich) Rosenberg. 

Marge graduated from LaParent School of Cosmetology in 1961 and prior to coming on staff at Klaassen Family Funeral Home she worked at Christian Haven Home. 

Marge and her husband enjoy spending time with their 5 grandchildren, attending their sporting and school events. They are members of St. Patrick-St. Anthony Parish in Grand Haven.


Richard Brest

Richard Brest

Pastoral Care

Richard recently moved to Grand Haven from Colorado with his wife Nancy to be closer to their 4 youngest grandchildren. He is a retired ordained Nazarene pastor of 38 years with extensive experience in grief support.

Richard has a deep love of God and people. He has three grown children and a total of 9 grandchildren. He received his education at Youngstown State University and Nazarene Bible College in Ohio and Colorado, respectively.

Richard is very active in the Church of the Nazarene located just one block from Klaassen Family Funeral Home. He enjoys camping, biking, boating and skiing with family and friends. He also enjoys listening to the oldies and has been a member of several Gospel singing groups.

Richard is available to meet with families to answer questions, listen to concerns and offer support during their time of grief and healing.

John Siemion

Funeral Assistant

John Siemion has been a life-long West Michigan resident. He is a graduate of Spring Lake High School and Davenport University. He and his wife Wendy live in Grand Haven.

John has worked at various companies in Grand Haven over the years with the last 17 at GHSP/JSJ Corp. retiring in 2012 from the IT Department. During his retirement John was the Club Manager at SGT Alvin Jonker VFW Post 2326 in Grand Haven for three years. John was a director on the Grand Haven Schools Foundation for 12 years. John presently is a member of the Grand Haven Area Public Schools Board of Education since 1999 and President since 2014.

John is a member of Eagles Aerie 925, Elks Lodge 1200 and SGT Alvin Jonker VFW Post 2326. In his spare time, John enjoys honoring military veterans by taking photographs at various events. He was the official photographer for the Legends Flight that took 94 WWII veterans to Washington DC in October 2014 to visit the WWII Memorial. John also enjoys computer repair and consulting.
