Mary Lou Nienhuis, age 82 of Spring Lake, passed away July 3, 2016 at home surrounded by her family, which was 11 years to that day that her husband Nelson passed away. Mary was born July 1, 1934 to Lewis and Margaret (Dalman) Klynstra in Wyoming, MI. She married Nelson Nienhuis on March 26, 1953 and soon after committed all of her time to raising their children and making a home. Mary was a member of Spring Lake Wesleyan Church. She enjoyed cooking and baking for her family. Mary had a special recipe for potato salad that not one of her children have been able to come close to making the same. Her chocolate cake with fluffy white frosting was a birthday favorite. Mary's grandsons enjoyed her blueberry coffee cake in later years. Mary loved to read, work puzzles, do word searches and play games on the computer. Her favorite card game was Phase 10. Her last game was played just days before her passing (she won). Mary loved the Lord. She started each day with her devotions and was a fine Christian example for her children. Mary will be lovingly remembered by her daughters, Debra (John) McFarlane of Jonesboro, AR, Barbara (Dan) Potts of Beulah, MI, Karen (Blaine) Johnson of Duluth, MN, Brenda (Lee) Warner of Spring Lake; son Nelson (Christine) Nienhuis of Spring Lake; grandchildren Josh (Laura) McFarlene of Seattle, WA, Brian (Chloe) McFarlane of Jonesboro, AR, Jon (Marie) Potts of Coopersville,MI, Jordon (Morgan) Potts of Beulah, MI, James (Jenna) Potts of Indianapolis, IN, Blaine Jr ( Bree) Johnson of Sagniaw, MN, Matt (Angela) Johnson of Sagniaw, MN, Kelli (Brendon) Ohara of Grand Haven, Chad Nienhuis of Spring Lake, Ashley Warner of Spring Lake, Christopher Warner of Spring Lake; 10 great-grandchildren; 2 sisters and a brother. She was preceded in death by her husband, Nelson and grandson, Geoffrey Potts. A private family service has taken place. Interment will be in Restlawn Cemetery. Family request that memorials be made to Hospice of North Ottawa Community in her memory. The family would like to thank the staff of Hospice of North Ottawa and Dr. Jack Roossien along with his daughters for the great care they gave our mother.
