William Paul Boomgaard, age 90, of Grand Haven, passed away on Wednesday, October 30, 2024, at a Lakeshore Assisted Living-Seville Residence. He was born on July 1, 1934, in Spring Lake, MI, to the late James and Mildred (Smith) Boomgaard.
William graduated from Grand Haven High School, Class of 1953. He then went on to proudly serve his country in the US Navy from 1956 to 1960. William married Sharon Bethke on February 20, 1960, in Spring Lake.
William retired from Grand Valley State University and was an active member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church. He was a former member of the Grand Haven Elks Club, and enjoyed fishing from his boat in Stearns Bayou, golfing with his friends, camping, and exploring Florida after retirement.
William will be lovingly remembered and missed by his beloved wife of 64 years, Sharon; his daughter, Leah (Michael) Peets of Grant; three sons: Michael (Judy) Boomgaard of Zeeland, Steven (Lynnet) Boomgaard of Marshall, and Patrick (Amy) Boomgaard of Grand Haven; 11 grandchildren: Katelyn (Jeff) Rork, Cody Boomgaard, Nicole (Jake) Sinclair, Douglas Boomgaard, Courtney (Ryan) Gilmore, Brian (Jenna) Boomgaard, Michael (Jenny) Espinoza, Kyle Peets, Lexi Boomgaard, Zachary Boomgaard, and Christian Boomgaard; nine great-grandchildren: Charlotte, Silas, Ryder, Cameron, Allison, Kaitlyn, Hanna, Andrew, and Henry; sister-in-law, Bette Boomgaard; and many loved nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his three sisters: Mildred DeBroux, Catherine Newell, and Helen Ball; and his five brothers: James, Phillip, Robert, Peter, and Joseph Boomgaard.
The Memorial Mass for William will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, November 8, 2024, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, with Fr. Bill Vander Werff officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be at Robinson Township Cemetery.
Memorial Contributions may be made to Trinity Health at Home Hospice-Grand Haven or St. Mary’s Catholic Church-Food Pantry.
