Wilferd “Wil” Groening Obituary

Wilferd “Wil” Daniel Groening, age 87 of Spring Lake, passed away on Saturday, January 20, 2024, at home. He was born on February 11, 1936, in Newton, KS, to the late Frank and Agnes (Cornelsen) Groening. Wil married Carole Lammerts on June 14, 1958, in Detroit, MI.

Wil graduated from Buhler High School and then attended Tabor College, both in Kansas. He started his career working in the medical field as a perfusionist, which he did until his retirement. He enjoyed time serving as a Lighthouse keeper in Ludington for many years as well.

Wil and his wife were longtime members of First Presbyterian Church in Grand Haven. Together, they enjoyed traveling a lot, visiting every state in the United States, and every continent except South America, Antarctica, and Asia. Wil enjoyed camping, hiking, and swimming in Lake Michigan. His children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren were the apples of his eye and he loved hard and played hard with them, proudly watching them grow.

Wil will be fondly remembered and missed by his loving wife of 65 years, Carole; and their two children, Gail (John) Pawlak of Spring Lake, MI, and David (Carol) Groening of Fairfax, VT; five beloved grandchildren: John (Erin) Pawlak, Daniel (Cassie) Pawlak, Sarah (Justin) Patterman, Sandra (Ben) Ashline, and Michael Groening; three great-grandchildren: Jack and Noah Patterman, and Gideon Pawlak; and his brother, Harvey Groening.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Marvin and Merlin Groening.

Private family services will be held.
