Weldon Deeds Luckey, age 89 of Grand Haven, went to his heavenly home on Sunday, December 15, 2019 after a short illness. He was born May 2, 1930 in Glen Elder, Kansas, the 9th child of the late Weldon and Florence (Deeds) Luckey. Weldon married Shirley Bouma on October 26, 1951 in Denver, CO and they celebrated 63 years of marriage before she preceded him in death on July 19, 2015. He served in the Naval Reserves.
Weldon and Shirley lived in California and Colorado before the family with four small children moved to Grand Rapids so Weldon could attend Calvin College. He graduated from Calvin College in 1960 with a teaching degree. Weldon taught in Iowa and Illinois before the family moved back to Michigan in 1967 so he could teach at WMCHS. He later worked at Clark Floor Machines and in the motel business before ending his working career at 70 years old at Pinewood Place.
He was a member of First Christian Reformed Church in Grand Haven. Weldon loved to sing and play the guitar. As a young man he sang country songs on the radio and had the stage name of Chris Wright. He decided that this profession wasn’t best for church and family life, so he did not pursue that as a career. He used his musical abilities through the years serving the Lord along with his wife. He was blessed to do a lot of traveling doing mission trips in Africa, India, and Mississippi along with visiting relatives and friends across our country and Australia.
Weldon was a handyman who could fix most anything; whether it be a car or household appliance, etc. He also built several houses. His favorite game was pinochle. He was known for his homemade chocolate ice cream and chocolate fudge. His faith and family were most important to him and he will be greatly missed.
Weldon is survived by his loving children: Steve (Kim) Luckey of Montana, Greg (Linda) Luckey of Grand Haven, Cheri (Dan) Holtrop of Grand Haven, Cindy (Mark) Stevens of Twin Lake, Linda (Dave) Meyer of Hudsonville, Nancy (Tim) VandeBunte of Holland, Mark (Stacy) Luckey of Indiana, Janis (Jay) Horton of Arizona; 33 grandchildren; 46 great-grandchildren; in-laws, Sid & Virginia Bouma and Ray & Barb Bouma. He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, and all siblings and their spouses.
The Funeral Service for Weldon will be at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, December 19, 2019 at First Christian Reformed Church with Pastors Cory Nederveld and Kelvin Miller officiating. Interment will be in Port Sheldon Township Cemetery. Friends may meet the family from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, December 18th at Klaassen Family Funeral Home.
