Virginia Neubauer Obituary

A kind and gentle soul has left us as Virginia Margaret Neubauer of Grand Haven, passed away peacefully in her home on the morning of Friday, January 26, 2024. She was 96 years old.

Virginia was born in 1927, to Max and Anna (Aches) Mitschang, and lived on Harding St. in Detroit, Michigan. Her cousins lived nearby, and they were great friends. After a heart defect was found in her mother, they all spent summers away from the hot city, camping on Lake Huron near Lexington, Michigan. Sadly, her mother died when Virginia was only thirteen, so her paternal grandmother came to live with the family. Although a city gal, she had farming relatives in Almont, Michigan that her family visited regularly, and she even helped with chores. She also took piano lessons.

Virginia completed a secretarial program in high school and went to work at Buell and Sons in Detroit. Being of strong German heritage, she attended ethnic social events where she met Karl, who dubbed her “Ginny.” After joining the Austrian Society, they enjoyed performing traditional dances and had a little combo to play traditional German and Czech music. They married in 1948 at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church in Detroit.

In 1950, Virginia and Karl built a house in Harper Woods, Michigan, where they raised their children. In 1998, they moved to Brighton with their son, Eric, and his family, and then lived in Grand Haven, Michigan since 2004 near their daughter, Carla, and her family.

When Virginia had their first child, Karl (Carly), she became a stay-at-home mom, and soon another boy and a girl was to follow. Tragically, Carly passed away at the age of three from leukemia. Three years later, another girl, Carla, rounded out the family. Among the dogs they raised together were three Airedale terriers, each named Heidi! Devoted to her family, Virginia kept busy with homemaking, gardening, and helping relatives, friends, and neighbors. She was known for her cooking and baking talents, particularly fried chicken, cheesecake, and pies baked with homegrown fruit. With a green thumb, she maintained the substantial vegetable garden, berry patches, and flower beds, with produce to share. Her tomatoes were locally famous!

Into her nineties, Virginia continued to run the household and work in the yard and garden; true joys for her. However, after losing Karl in 2018, she began to struggle and was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease the following year. With family rallying to her aid, her daughters moved in, and she was able to continue to enjoy her home and garden. Her decline over this last year became more pronounced, and in her final month, she transitioned to Hospice. Throughout her illness, she remained pleasant and gentle as she had been all her life.

Virginia is survived by her son, Eric (Laura) Neubauer; two daughters, Lori Hodkinson and Carla Bender; grandchildren: Eric and John Hodkinson, Karin (Daniel) Neubauer, Nikki (Danny) Grode, Britt (Allen) Crowe, and George (Kassandra) Bender; great-grandchildren, Harrison, Margot and Clara Grode, and Kaison Tippin; and her sister-in-law, Betty Mitschang.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Karl; her young son, Karl; her brother, Donald Mitschang; grandson, Alan (Candie) Hodkinson; and the beloved Heidi dogs.
