Vera “Petie” A. (Magrum) Oom

Vera “Petie” Oom, age 83 of Grand Haven, passed away Saturday, May 30, 2020 at home surrounded by her husband, children, and grandchildren following a short illness. Vera was born on June 25, 1936 in Cape May, New Jersey to the late Harold and Leona (LaForgett) Magrum. 

Her father was in the Coast Guard and served on the USCG Cutter Escanaba and was later stationed in Grand Haven. Petie graduated from Grand Haven High School in 1955. She and her husband, Edwin A. Oom were high school sweethearts. They married on January 21, 1956 in Grand Haven, MI.  Petie and Ed had five children.

Petie was a member of St. Patrick– St. Anthony’s Catholic Church and also a member of the Little Traverse Bay Bands of Odawa Indians. She was known for her kindness, generosity, and love for others. Family was always her priority and she always had time for a friend. Petie enjoyed reading, bingo, visiting casinos and playing Blazing 7’s, and wintering in Florida for many years.

Petie is lovingly remembered and survived by her husband of 64 years, Edwin; her children, Kellie, Edwin Jr., Brad, and Karen (Maury) Fredricks all of Grand Haven; nine grandchildren: Danielle (Zac) and Austin Oom, and their mother, Kelly; Sarah Oom and her mother, Shelly; Breona (Eric) and Isabel Vanderlaan, and their father, Phil; Sandi (Evan), Ben, Louis (Victoria), Sam (Tiffany) Fredricks; two great-granddaughters, Alba and Ava; several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her step-mother, Loretta “Dolly” Stafford; her sisters, Ethel and Katherine Jean; her son, David; and her dear friends, Mary Jo and Marilyn.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 4, 2020 at St. Patrick’s – St. Anthony’s Parish with Fr. Charles Schwartz officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the Church. Interment will be at Lake Forest Cemetery.
