Terre Lynn Balkema, 83, of Grand Haven, Michigan, passed away peacefully on August 29, 2025. Born on May 11, 1942, to Harold and Eula Japinga, Terre was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. She married the love of her life, David J. Balkema Sr., and together they shared countless adventures along the Michigan lakeshore—visiting bakeries, shops, and markets while enjoying the simple joys of life together.
Terre dedicated her career to retail, where she set the standard for excellence in customer service. Her genuine warmth and ability to make others feel cared for left a lasting impression on colleagues and customers alike.
She was passionate about her family, friends, neighbors, and community. Terre found great joy in tending to her many flower gardens, creating beauty that reflected her own generous and nurturing spirit. Always putting the needs of others first, she leaves behind a legacy of kindness and love.
A lifelong Michigan State basketball fan, Terre proudly cheered on the Spartans as their number one supporter. Her love for the green and white was unmatched, and she rarely missed a chance to root for her team.
She is survived by her husband, David J. Balkema, Sr.; her children, David J. (Jane) Balkema, Jr. and Susan L. (Thomas) Hunt; and her beloved granddaughter, Grace Cai Balkema.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and her brother, Douglas Japinga.
In accordance with Terre's wishes, no services will be held.
