Sylvia Mae (Bos) Tubergen, age 89 of Grand Haven, formerly Holland and West Olive, MI, was called home to be with her Lord and Savior on Saturday, December 30, 2023. She was 89 years young. Sylvia, the oldest of three daughters, was born on November 12, 1934, in Grand Rapids, MI, to the late Cornelius and Jeanette (Meeter) Bos.

Sylvia attended Grand Rapids Christian High School and Calvin College.  She received her nursing degree and graduated in 1955.  She engaged in numerous social events and activities, and played on the women’s basketball team, the Calvin Knighties. While attending Calvin College, she met her husband, Morrie Tubergen, while participating in their many shared interests. They were married on November 23, 1957, in Grand Rapids.

Sylvia lived an exceedingly full life: she was a devoted wife and mother - raising children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren; actively participating in the church; as well as volunteering at numerous charities. Some of her favorites were the Good Samaritan Center in Holland, Bible Study Fellowship, and Tri-Cities Intercessors in Grand Haven. She was a driving force in the Michigan Chapter of National Day of Prayer during her three decades-long involvement.  Throughout her life, her faith and commitment to Christ was her source of strength - a rock for herself, her family, and friends.

Sylvia had a zest for life and loved the outdoors. She had a special place in her heart for the beaches of Lake Michigan. She actively participated in sports and especially loved softball throughout her life. Sylvia continued to play on church softball leagues well into her seventies - at most every position. As the years went on, the friendships and fellowship became more important than the score.

With her outgoing personality, radiant smile, and kind spirit, she never seemed to meet a stranger. There are numerous family memories of her chatting with a new acquaintance, only finding out during their conversation that there was some type of mutual connection, or shared family history.

One of Sylvia’s many endearing qualities was her compassion. When family or friends needed assistance, at the drop of a hat, she would jump in her car and drive for hours on end to offer words of encouragement or lend a helping hand.

Although now in Heaven, Sylvia is much loved and will be greatly missed by her husband of 66 years, Morrie; and their three children: son, Bret Tubergen; two daughters, Dawn (David) Richardson and Heather (Tim) Hoezee; grandchildren: Greyson Tubergen, Arielle (Alex) (Richardson) MacDonald, Gabe Richardson, Lauren and Ben Hoezee; great-grandchildren: Jackson and Damian Richardson, and Adelaide and Aleenah MacDonald; sister, Sally (Bos) Henshaw; brother-in-law, Wayne (Cynthia) Muller; and many cherished nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her sister, Suzanne (Bos) Muller; and brother-in-law, H. Cullen Henshaw.

The Celebration of life for Sylvia will take place at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 13, 2024, at Klaassen Family Funeral Home. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Interment will be at Grand Haven Township Historic Cemetery.
