Shirley Joan Shaver, beloved child of God, ended her journey on earth and began her new life in the presence of Jesus Christ on Wednesday, July 8, 2020. She was born in Grand Haven, MI on April 20, 1924 to the late Gerald and Johanna Tinholt. Shirley married Sidney Shaver on June 20, 1947. He passed away on February 16, 1978.
She had the heart of a servant and was a lifelong member of Second Christian Reformed Church, Grand Haven. Shirley taught science at Orchard View Middle School for many years and upon her retirement, taught in Guatemala and Russia. Her family, to whom she was devoted, will miss her.
Surviving are her children, Ruth (Stephen) Marotti of Grand Haven, Mary Lou (Stephen) Trocke of Spring Lake, and Carl (Patricia) Shaver of Lombard, IL. Also surviving are her 8 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren: Ellen (Rich) Krasin (Katelyn, Emily, Nicholai), Christopher Gleason (Linus); Joel Marotti, Leah (Derek) Rust (Esther), Paul (Carissa) Marotti (Sydney, James), Anna (Vlad) Abramenka (Michael), John (Jennifer) Trocke (Lily, Abby, Henry), Sarah Trocke; many nieces, and a nephew. Her only sister, Mary Ellen Heemstra, preceded her in death on June 17, 2001, and her granddaughter, Dr. Linda Shaver-Gleason, who passed away on January 14, 2020.
A Celebration to honor her faith and life will be held at a later date. A private family Graveside Service will be held at Lake Forest Cemetery with Pastor Laura de Jong officiating. Memorial Contributions in Shirley’s name may be given to Love in Action.
