Shirley Jean (Nederveld) Engel

Shirley Jean Engel, age 94, of Grand Haven, passed away on Tuesday, January 6, 2026, in Grandville. She was born on Christmas Day, December 25, 1931, in Grandville, MI, to the late John and Gertrude (Dreyer) Nederveld. Shirley married Stuart J. Engel on July 10, 1952, in Grandville. He preceded her in death on July 16, 2018, after 66 years of marriage.

Shirley graduated from high school and went on to work as an attendant for Grand Haven Area Public Schools for many years before her retirement. She was an active member of Trinity Church Grand Haven (formerly Trinity Reformed Church), where she served in many capacities.

Shirley was a fan of Detroit Tigers baseball and enjoyed working on word searches, puzzles, playing Bingo, reading, baking, and watching her daily TV shows. She especially loved being out in the sun and going to the lake.

Shirley will be lovingly remembered and missed by her daughter, Sharon (Gary) Williams of Grandville; three sons: Douglas (Sindy) Engel of Baldwin, Mark (Faith) Engel of Grand Haven, and Timothy (Amy) Engel of Grand Haven; 17 grandchildren; and 31 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Stu; and grandson, Mitch Engel (1987).

The Funeral Service for Shirley will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, January 12, 2026, Trinity Church Grand Haven, with Pastor Emmett Brown officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be at Grand Haven Township Lakeshore Cemetery.
