Richard Scholler Obituary

Richard Leo Scholler, age 81 of Grand Haven, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, May 3, 2022, peacefully surrounded by loved ones after suffering a stroke. He was born on November 6, 1940 to the late C.L. and Ruth (Williams) Scholler.

Dick was raised in Big Rapids, MI and graduated from Big Rapids High School in 1956. In 1960, he graduated with his BA in Business from Western Michigan University, where he was also a proud member of the Delta Chi Fraternity.

Upon his graduation from University, Dick enlisted in the Naval Officer Candidate School and headed to Rhode Island to start his naval career. He received his commission on October 25, 1962 and was assigned to a Destroyer out of Mayport, Florida. Dick was a Second Division Officer on the USS Farmington and The Pictor. Upon completion of his naval obligation, he was promoted to full Lieutenant.

Dick married Carol Morris on September 23, 1967 in Midland, MI and they resided in Evanston, IL, where he began his 40 plus year career in the printing business. They later moved back to Michigan and settled in Grand Haven to raise their family. Dick was employed by Pippel Patterson/Dana Printing for many years before the company merged with Foremost Graphics in Walker, MI, where he eventually retired from.

Dick was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church where he served as an usher and greeter. He was a past member of the Grand Haven Area Jaycee’s, the Grand Haven Rotary Club, and the Spring Lake Country Club. Dick enjoyed skiing, doing yard work, traveling, playing golf with his golf group, fly fishing, and mostly, spending time with his family.

Dick is survived by his wife of 54 years, Carol; his daughter, Kathryn Scholler Ferris; sons, Stephen (Anne) and James (Jennifer) Scholler; grandchildren, James, Benjamin, Isabel, and Garrett Scholler, Elizabeth and Leo Ferris; brother, Thomas (Marcia) Scholler; sister, Barbara (Doug) Scholler Berry; and many nieces and nephews.
