On 12 May 2021 at 10:30 AM the Honor Guards of the Charles A Conklin, American Legion Post 28 and VFW Post 2326 will lay to rest a fellow veteran. The VFW Rifle Team and American Legion Honor Guard and Bugler will conduct a committal service, officiated by American Legion Chaplain Duane Smith, at Lake Forest Cemetery.
As a Veteran who enlisted in the US Navy in 1973, he apparently had fallen on difficult times and passed away at the Heron Point ReHab facility on 7/11/2020. He had a passion for Animals and gardening. While he did have some local family, none remain in this area. Arrangements were made with the help of Klaassen Family Funeral Home to have his cremains interred in a family plot. (Plot number 25)
Whatever family he did have, raised enough funds to have his remains cremated and shipped to Lake Forest Cemetery where they have been on a shelf for a considerable time. Cemetery Board Member, Ron Streng, a Retired Navy Chief and an active member of the American Legion Honor Guard brought the need to the attention of the American Legion Honor Guard to see if we could assist in raising funds and conduct a committal service with honors. Ron raised funds from several individual members of AL and VFW Honor Guard. The need was also presented to a Grace Assembly of God in Fruitport who provided the remainder of the necessary funds to have Richard buried in the family plot committal.
Special thanks to Klaassen Family Funeral Home for their assistance for the service.
