Maxine Moore Obituary

Maxine Delores Moore, age 97, of Spring Lake, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, August 12, 2025, in Traverse City. She was born on February 15, 1928, in Muskegon to the late William and Matilda (Ludwig) Gilmore.

Maxine met Andrew Moore while visiting her grandparents in Mancelona. They were married on June 11, 1948. Andrew preceded her in death on April 9, 1999, after 50 years of marriage.  Time with their children and grandchildren was greatly cherished, and for Maxine, those visits were never too often or long enough.

Maxine and Andy enjoyed many years going camping and snowmobiling with her sisters’ families, and she continued winter sled and snowmobile rides into her 80’s. Maxine lived in the house where she and Andy raised their family where she continued to host family holidays, with the last being Christmas Eve of 2024. Maxine regularly made banana bread for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who also anticipated annual homemade strawberry jam and applesauce. In addition to cooking and baking, she enjoyed crocheting, knitting, sewing, and quilting, especially when together with family and friends.

Maxine did not turn down a casino trip or a card game. Bingo was a weekly outing with her daughter, Sandy, and she also enjoyed Thursday night visits with her long-time friend, Mary. The Friday afternoon card club (Carolyn, Pat, and Jan) was another highlight of Maxine’s week. Several nieces and nephews would also visit for the occasional day-long card marathon. It took all three of her daughters to actively keep up with her schedule.

Maxine will be lovingly remembered and missed by her three daughters: Sandy (Stu) Schmitt, Dodie Moore (Bob Duer), and Pam (Tom) Tilton; her son, A.J. (Ann) Moore; daughter-in-law, Candy (Rick) Brown; 13 beloved grandchildren: Jack (Crystal) Andree, Scott (Sharon) Andree, A.J. (Linda) Moore, II, Michelle (Dale) Sheridan, Krystle (Steven) Lawson, Sam (Emily) Schmitt, Jeffrey Zant (Amber Klein), Heather (Brandon) Taipalus, Andy (Andrea) Zant, Christopher (Haley) Tilton, Stephania Tilton, Aaron (Molly) Tilton, and Shawn (Kelly) Sullins; many great-grandchildren; and her two sisters, Marion White and Helen Hudson.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Andrew; son, Ernie Moore; and sister, Dottie Plunkett.

The Funeral Service for Maxine will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, August 18, 2025, at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Spring Lake, with Pastor Michael Hughes officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be at Spring Lake Township Cemetery.
