Matilda “Tillie” Jean DeGarmo, age 91 of Grand Haven, passed away on Thursday, July 7, 2022 at Lakeshore Assisted Living-Sierra House. She was born on July 22, 1930 in Newberry, MI to the late David and Elda (Washburn) DeVerney. Tillie married Maynard DeGarmo on July 1, 1977 in Grand Rapids, MI. He preceded her in death on August 28, 2019 after 42 years of marriage.
Matilda graduated from Ada High School and worked for Grand Haven Area Public Schools and Spring Lake Country Club, doing food prep. She loved cooking and baking, tending to her veggie gardens, and bowling on a league in her younger years. Tillie also enjoyed traveling, and she and Maynard took many trips in their time together.
Tillie will be lovingly remembered and missed by her daughters, Cheryl DeGarmo, Marie Abraham, Roberta (Lewis) Corner, Madeline (Scott) Hamlin, and Angela DeGarmo; sons, Floyd (Susan), Patrick (Lori), and Joseph (Holly) DeGarmo; step-children, May Elda, James, Andrew, Henry (Amy), Eric (Kim) DeGarmo; several grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; brothers, Peter (Patti), Dan (Dottie), and Dennis DeVerney; sister, Daisy DeGarmo; and brother-in-law, Bruce DeGarmo.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Maynard; her son, Michael DeGarmo; son-in-law, Jack Abraham; step-daughter, Nancy Hentschel; granddaughter, Heather DeGarmo; great-grandson, Levi Tennent; and nine siblings.
The Memorial Mass for Tillie will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, July 19, 2022 at St. Patrick - St. Anthony’s Catholic Parish with Fr. Norm Droski officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be at Fort Custer National Cemetery, next to her husband.
