Mary Ellen Skaio, age 69 of Grand Haven, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, August 8, 2020 at Spectrum Health-Butterworth Hospital. She was born on June 16, 1951 in Mason, MI to Wallace Reid and Mildred Elizabeth (Eastman) Bailey. Mary married Ralph W. Skaio on October 4, 1986 in Grand Haven, MI.
Mary grew up in Mason and graduated from Mason High School, Class of 1969. She then obtained her Associates degree in Business Administration from Lansing Business College. Mary worked as an office manager for Dr. Ben Nykamp, Old Kent Bank, Redeker Ford, and she owned Lincoln Logs Motel in Charlevoix, MI.
Mary attended Second Reformed Church for many years where she organized dinners at the church on Wednesdays. She was the PTL President of St. John’s Lutheran School, and looked forward to meeting the ladies from her church for coffee at Russ’ each week.
Mary and Ralph enjoyed going up north and spending time at their cabin in Alpena, going camping, and spending time with family. Mary especially loved being a grandmother and was a very loving and supportive grandma to her six grandchildren. She will be missed by so many in her life.
Mary is lovingly remembered and missed by her husband of 33 years, Ralph; daughter, Michelle (Cornelisse) Kostner; sons, Scott (Kathy) Cornelisse, Michael (Megan) Skaio, and Matthew (Ashley) Skaio, all of Grand Haven; grandchildren, Jacob and Megan Kostner, Kamden and Olivia Cornelisse, Madilyn Skaio and Addison Skaio; sister, Margaret (James) Rayner; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Wallace and Mildred Bailey; and parents-in-law, Lorraine and Ralph Skaio.
The Memorial Service for Mary will be at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 15, 2020 at Second Reformed Church with Pastor Dan Eisnor officiating. Visitation will take place on Friday, August 14th from 5 – 8 p.m. at the church, and one hour prior to the service Saturday at the church.
