Marjorie Jo (De Haan) Somerville

Marjorie Jo Somerville, “Jo,” age 96, of Grand Haven, passed away on Thursday, September 14, 2023, at Lakeshore Assisted Living-Sierra Residence. She was born on April 4, 1927, in Owosso, MI, to Alfred and Frances (Haggerty) De Haan. Jo was married to Robert Somerville, who preceded her in death.

She was a former resident of Grand Rapids and a current resident of Grand Haven since 2002. Her true passion in life was that she loved interior designing homes. In her early 20’s, she was employed as a contract designer and space planner, and was also a former design store owner in Ada. Jo was a member of the United Methodist Church of the Dunes, and past member of Cascade Township Board and the Kent County Commission.

Surviving are her son, Nathan (Vianey) Shirley of California; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert; three brothers: Howard, William, and Jon De Haan; and a sister, Frances De Haan Bennink.

The Memorial Service to Celebrate Jo’s Life will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, September 27, 2023 at the United Methodist Church of the Dunes with Pastor Lou Grettenberger officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be at the United Methodist Church of the Dunes Memorial Garden.
