Maria Van Houwelingen Obituary

Maria P. Van Houwelingen, age 97 of Grand Haven, was called home to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on Sunday, February 7, 2021. She was born February 13, 1923 to the late Pieter and Maria (DeGraaf) Korving in Scheveningen, The Netherlands. Maria and her husband, Cornelis “Case,” Van Houwelingen were married shortly after the war on January 24, 1946. They emigrated to the states with three young children in 1955, and settled in Grand Haven.

Maria loved the Lord, and was a member of First Christian Reformed Church, where she sang in the choir for many years. Maria enjoyed nature, spending many hours walking in the woods with Case. She was an accomplished seamstress who loved music, was an avid reader, and enjoyed traveling and camping.  Maria also served her community by volunteering with N.O.C.H. for more than 20 years. Most importantly, she loved being with her family and enjoyed serving them.

Maria will be lovingly remembered by her children, Tony (Margie) Van Houwelingen of Grand Haven, Peter (Su) van Houwelingen of Neenah, WI, Anna (Gary) Sluis of Grand Haven, Marjon (Carl) Dodde of Lake City, MI; grandchildren, Marc (Amber) Van Houwelingen, Tyler van Houwelingen, Nick (Allison) Van Houwelingen, Luke (Diana) van Houwelingen, Elisabeth (Jeremy) Von Eitzen, Rebecca (Andrew) Waaso, Jessica (Rob) Coenen, Megan (David) Thumann, Adam (Lauren) Coonen, Jon (Lisa) Sluis, Joel (Michaela) Sluis, Maria (Karl) Marcusse, Erin (Todd) Koetje, Carla (Joel) Brummel and Alexandra Dodde; great grandchildren, Natalie, Cora, Case, Peyton, Noa, Maaike, Joshua, Zachary, Emery, Evelyn, Kendal, Henry, Liam, Caleb, Cullen, Franklin, Hannah, Micah, Leah, Noah, Aidan, Jane, Josephine, Alistair and Evert; daughter-in-law, Kathy van Houwelingen; sisters-in-law, Riet, Trijntje and Hannie van Houwelingen, of the Netherlands; and many nieces and nephews.

Maria was preceded in death by her husband, Case in 2013; granddaughter, Rachel Sluis on November 27, 2020; brother, Arie Korving; and sisters, Johanna Keus-Korving, Gerri Vander Harst-Korving, and Helena Verbeek-Korving.
