Maria C. (Rodriguez) Toy

Maria C. Toy, age 95, of Spring Lake, passed away on Tuesday, February 9, 2021 at Robbinswood Assisted Living. She was born on April 9, 1925 in Miami, AZ to the late Marcelino and Catarina (Garcia) Rodriguez. Maria married Dr. Charles M. Toy, M.D., on December 28, 1953 and he preceded her in death in 1989.

After graduating from high school, Maria went to Hope College, obtaining her Bachelors of Art Degree, and then went to Middlebury and received a Master’s degree in Education. She worked as a school teacher, in many capacities, for Muskegon Heights High School for nearly 40 years.

Maria, also known to many as "Aunt Mary," had a great impact on the lives of so many people; she will be dearly missed and fondly remembered.  Aunt Mary enjoyed living on the water and loved tinkering around and tending to her flower garden. She had a love for animals, a passion for hats, having different ones for each occasion.  She enjoyed shopping, and was a very social person with a lot of friends, and looked forward to any opportunity she had to entertain friends and guests in her home.

Maria is survived by her sister, Raquel Sanders, and her dear friends of many years, Janice Batka and Jill Bordon.  She was preceded in death by two sisters and a brother.

Private Family Services will be held at a later date. Interment will be at Spring Lake Township Cemetery.
