Maleena N. Bagalay (born Chiyoko Nakada), age 83 of Grand Haven, passed away on Saturday, July 25, 2020 at home. She was born on January 26, 1937 in Okinawa, Japan to the late Kiyoshi Nakada and Kama Yonashiro. Chiyoko worked hard to become a United States citizen, and in the 1960’s, she achieved this and legally changed her name to Maleena Bagalay.
Maleena married Ronald Bagalay on February 20, 1959 in Okinawa, Japan. He preceded her in death on May 1, 1987 after many happy years of marriage.
She was a stay at home mother to her five children who enjoyed crocheting and sewing, cooking for her family, and gardening. In her younger years, Maleena loved to play tennis and volleyball, and was a big WWE Wrestling fan and baseball fan. She loved her Detroit Tigers, and followed all their games on television. Most importantly, she loved being a mother and grandmother to her children and grandchildren.
Maleena is lovingly remembered and missed by her four sons, Michael (Shirley) Bagalay and Sean (Amy) Bagalay , all of Grand Haven; Ed Bagalay (Rhonda Whelpley) of Spring Lake, and Brian (Mia) Bagalay of Florida; 12 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; in-laws, Romana (David) Botsford, Fausto (Janice) Bagalay, Colleen (Mike) Baldwin; and siblings, Harumi (Joe) Tillotson and Yukinobu Nakada, all of Hawaii.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ronald; son, Dean; and grandson, Zach.
The Funeral Service for Maleena will be at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, July 31, 2020 at Lakeshore Baptist Church with Pastor Nate Birkholz officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service on Friday at the church. Interment will be at Lake Forest Cemetery.
