Louis Wallinga Obituary

Louis G. Wallinga, age 101, of Grand Haven, passed away on Thursday, October 2, 2025, at Trinity Health Grand Haven Hospital surrounded by his family and went home to his Lord. He was born on July 11, 1924, in Eastmanville, MI, to the late Louis and Jennie (Vander Ploeg) Wallinga.

Louis grew up on a farm in Eastmanville working alongside his father and on his uncle's fruit and vegetable farm. At age 21, he proudly served his country as a medical technician in the US Army, from 1945 to 1947, during World War II. After his military service, he met the love of his life, Ethel Mulder, and they were married on August 3, 1949.

Louis worked as a drywall finisher for many years before purchasing Mulder's Feed Store in 1970. He owned and operated his renamed store, Wallinga's Feed and Garden, (now known as the City Farmer) up until his retirement.

Louis was a long-time member of First Christian Reformed Church where he was very active. After retirement, he enjoyed fishing and golfing, and at age 91, beating the odds, he sunk a hole-in-one during a golf outing at Evergreen Golf Course.

Louis was a kind, compassionate family man and loving husband who cherished his family and was always kind to others. He most enjoyed attending his grandchildren's sporting events. Louis will be forever remembered and missed by so many who were blessed to cross his path.

Louis is survived by his beloved wife of 76 years, Ethel; and their four sons: Jerry (Gay) Wallinga of Zeeland, Jack (Mary) Wallinga of Grant, James (Patti) Wallinga of Hudsonville, and Joel Wallinga of Ann Arbor; 13 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Dorothy Wallinga; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter-in-law, Beth Wallinga; granddaughters, Carrie Wallinga and Kimberly Eling; brother and sister-in-law, Paul and Madelyn Wallinga; brother, Lester Wallinga; and sister and brother-in-law, Emaline and Melvin Van Farowe.

The Funeral Service for Louis will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, October 8, 2025, at First Grand Haven CRC with Pastor Art Van Wolde officiating. Visitations will be held on Tuesday, October 7th, from 5:00 to 7:00 pm, at Klaassen Family Funeral Home, as well as one hour prior the service at the church on Wednesday. Interment will be at Allendale Township Cemetery.

Memorial Contributions may be made to Grand Haven Christian School or Western Michigan Christian High School.
