Lee Soncrant Obituary

Lee N. Soncrant, age 85 of Grand Haven passed away on March 22, 2023 at Lakeshore Assisted Living.  Lee was born November 15, 1937 in Adrian, MI to the late Earl and Cordia (Pate) Soncrant and was the youngest of four children.  Lee attended Olivet College where he played football and then transferred to the Michigan State Police Academy in Lansing, MI and graduated in 1960.  He met his wife Darlene Geerlings while directing traffic at the Holland Tulip Festival and they were married 1964.

He began his career as a Michigan State Trooper at the Bay City, MI post and was then drafted into the U.S. Army where he served in New Mexico as an MP for two years.  Lee then transferred to the Houghton Lake Post for two years and then to his first choice at the Grand Haven post in 1966 where he served for 27 years.  Lee completed his Bachelor’s degree from Grand Valley State University and taught Criminal Justice at Muskegon Community College.  Upon retirement from the Michigan State Police, he briefly worked for Central Dispatch in Grand Haven and then for Ottawa County as a probation officer where he retired at the age of 70.

Lee enjoyed woodworking and was immensely proud of the house he built in Grand Haven Township where he lived the rest of his life.  He was also an audiophile and found great enjoyment in classical music, especially piano, and would spend hours listening to music.  Lee enjoyed a good political discussion over a bottle of wine, especially at Thanksgiving, his favorite holiday.

Lee is survived by his loving wife Darlene; adoring children Kirsten (Glenn) Del Vecchio, Marsi and Noelle Soncrant; grandchildren Jack and Alex Del Vecchio, Haven and Holland Soncrant; and many nieces and nephews.

A private family service will be held at a later date.
