Larry Russell Wilson’s spirit departed from us on Friday, December 20, 2024, at the age 81. He was of Grand Haven. He was born on March 30, 1943, in Traverse City, MI, to the late Leroy and Lilah (Brown) Wilson. He married Jane DeYoung on August 27, 1966. She preceded him in death on August 8, 2024.
Larry “Whitey” graduated from Mount Pleasant High School, where he earned All State Honors in Basketball. He later attended Central Michigan University where he earned a BS in Education and a MA in Counseling. Larry was a much-loved high school and College Basketball coach in the seventies and early eighties. His passion occasionally overflowed into screaming at the referees. His nickname was, “Peanuts,” known for shucking and eating peanuts throughout the games.
Later in life, Larry became a well-known entrepreneur on the Lakeshore, selling licensed College and NFL product and sharing his love for sports with anyone and everyone.
Larry was a gregarious lover of life and people. He always had a way of making you feel special when he was conversing with you…(or trying to sell you something).
He loved his family and friends to the fullest. Also, his dog, Max.
Larry is survived by his three children: David (Aimee) Wilson, Kris (Jaden) Wilson-Keen, and Jaime (Michael) Wilson-McCormick; 11 grandchildren: Sophia, Nick, Taj, Ada, Skylar, Michael, Luke, Kiean, Levi, Emily, Samuel; sisters, Sheila Pantlind and Barbara Gosling; sister-law, Diane (Clare) Robison; and plenty of nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and five brothers: Don, Jack, Warren, Billy, and Bob Wilson.
The Celebration of Life for Jane and Larry will be held on Thursday, December 26, 2024, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m., at the Grand Haven Elks Club-Upstairs Hall.
