Kay Dawn Bytwerk, age 71, of Spring Lake, went to be with Jesus the evening of Wednesday, January 15, 2025, while surrounded by her family. Her passing came after a year-long battle with ALS. She was born on August 4, 1953, in Lansing, Michigan, the daughter of James and Ann (Merriam) Bowden, Jr.
Kay and her husband Doug met while elementary students at Lansing Christian School and married during their college years. Truly best friends, Doug and Kay served together in ministry for many years with gifts that complemented each other well. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in August 2024.
A graduate of Central Michigan University, Kay taught school at times. However, her life was spent caring for people, leading student ministries in their churches and as a prayer warrior.
Kay and Doug pastored in Sparta, Ravenna and, beginning in 1997, Spring Lake. She loved and was dedicated to mentoring and spiritually caring for those around her. A gifted teacher, she led Bible studies for many years. During her time at Spring Lake, with close friends she prepared meals for AWANA and community families that became a highlight of Wednesdays evenings.
After their retirement in 2018, Kay and Doug joined All Shores Wesleyan, where Kay served on the Wellspring Prayer Team, as a small group leader and as a greeter. A true servant who constantly cared for those around her, Kay was a discerning voice to many at times when a friend was needed.
Kay is lovingly remembered and survived by her husband of 50 years, Doug; and their four children: Bethany (John) LaTorre of Deerfield, IL, Rachel (Curt) Porter of Newport, RI, David (Jennifer) Bytwerk of Spring Lake, and Joshua (Shelby) Bytwerk also of Spring Lake; and nine grandchildren: Sophia, Margaret, Noah, Jordan and Zoe Bytwerk, and Jayla, Justice, Soveran, and Zion LaTorre; her sister, Cathy Bytwerk; and three brothers: Kent (Mehae) Bowden, Jim (Martha) Bowden, and Calvin (Amy) Bowden.
The Celebration of Life Funeral Service will take place at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 23, 2025, at All Shores Wesleyan Church in Spring Lake with Pastor Peter Yoshonis officiating. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, January 22, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., at the church, as well as one hour prior to the service on Thursday.
Interment will be at Grand Haven Township Lakeshore Cemetery.
