John “Yogi” Richard VanHassel, age 49 of Whitehall, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, July 8, 2020 at home. He was born on October 7, 1970 in Muskegon, MI to John and Glenda (Dutton) VanHassel.
John was a graduate of Whitehall High School, Class of 1988. He worked as a welder at Arconic (Howmet) and was a member of the Abate of Michigan Motorcycle Club. John was a simple man, who loved nothing more than a good party surrounded by family and friends, and he enjoyed going camping as much as possible. His building skills proved very useful when he and his family took on the construction of the Windy Cove Condos in Whitehall. John will be missed by so many who knew him.
John is remembered and missed by his daughter, Haley VanHassel (Mark Anderson) of Muskegon, MI; his son, Marine LCpl. Zachory VanHassel also of Muskegon; three grandchildren; his mother, Glenda VanHassel; sister, Mary King; brother, Aaron Mick Hartman; mother of his children, Jennifer (Goodrich) VanHassel; close friend, Melissa Thompson DeWolfe; as well as several aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, John VanHassel; niece, Alicia Wesley; and close friend, Darrel Ripley.
A Celebration of John’s life will be held at a later date to be announced. Interment will be at Fruitland Township Cemetery. Memorial Contributions may be made to: Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, Wounded Warrior Project, or Abate of Michigan.
