John David Schmalz

John David Schmalz, age 67 of Grand Haven, passed away on Friday, August 2, 2019 at home. He was born on June 30, 1952 in Pontiac, MI to the late John and Margaret (McHugh) Schmalz. John married Kathie Booth on September 8, 1979 and she preceded him in death on July 29, 2010.

John worked for Grand Rapids Building Services for 25 plus years washing windows for industrial buildings. He was a big sports fan who always rooted for the Detroit Tigers and Detroit Lions, and loved rock-n-roll music from the 60’s and 70’s. John enjoyed being outdoors and you could always find him on the water, either boating or fishing. He especially loved his dogs, namely his Westies.

John will be lovingly remembered and missed by his two sons, Andrew Schmalz (Donna Haig) and Stacey Schmalz (Marissa Gruen) all of Grand Haven; grandchildren, Max Haig, Chris Martinez, Amanda Cooper, and Evalie Groen; and two sisters, Joan Guinther and Marilyn Appelman.

A Memorial Gathering of family and friends will take place on Sunday, August 11, 2019, from 3 – 5 p.m. at Klaassen Family Funeral Home. Interment will be at Lake Forest Cemetery.

Memorial Contributions may be given to the American Cancer Society.
