He was born on October 28, 1930, in Cleveland, Ohio, to the late John J. and Mary (Kocanic) Bann, Sr. John married Joan Baeckler on November 21, 1953, and she preceded him in death on September 5, 2015, after 61 years of marriage.

John was a graduate of General Motors Institute and Case Western Reserve. He proudly served his country in the US Coast Guard during the Korean War Era, from 1954 to 1957. John went on to enjoy a fulfilling career with General Motors until his retirement in 1990.

He volunteered his time to the Lenawee County United Fund (President, 1971 -1973), Associated Charities Lenawee, the Ferrysburg City Council (1975-1981), and the City of Ferrysburg as Mayor (1981-1985). John also served on the board of directors for the US Coast Guard Festival and the Ferrysburg Planning Commission.

In his free time, John enjoyed hunting, fishing, boating, collecting Civil War memorabilia, and cheering for The Ohio State Buckeyes. He was also a proud member of the National Rifle Association.
