It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Jerry E. Sitzer, of Baldwin (formerly, Grand Haven), beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, who left us peacefully at the age of 71, on Friday, October 4, 2024.
Jerry was born on June 15, 1953, in Grand Rapids, MI, to the late Lyle and Ethel (Fosberg) Sitzer. He then relocated to Grand Haven where he grew up. Jerry married Karen M. Demchuk on November 8, 1980, in Grand Haven.
He graduated from Grand Haven High School, Class of 1972, and dedicated much of his professional life to Shape Corp., where he served as a supervisor for around 20 years before retiring. Jerry’s early career saw him building homes for the late Steve Karrell, followed by many years at S.O.S. Engineering. In 2019, he and his wife, Karen, made the move to Baldwin, where they enjoyed their retirement together.
Throughout his life, Jerry was passionate about many activities. He loved camping, bowling, and playing softball, where he forged lifelong friendships, especially with his childhood best friend, Pat Corbett. Jerry was a sports fan, passionately supporting the Detroit Lions, Tigers, and Red Wings. Whether he was watching a game or listening on the radio, his enthusiasm was infectious.
An avid hunter, Jerry cherished his time at deer camp—Camp 303 in the Upper Peninsula—where he enjoyed unforgettable adventures with his brother-in-law, Jeff, and nephews, Luke and Josh. He had a knack for finding “good deals” at online auctions and loved working on DIY projects around the house, often recruiting his son-in-law, Chris, to assist him as he took on various renovations at their cottage in Silver Lake and cabin in Baldwin.
In retirement, Jerry and Karen spent their winters in Florida, but selflessly relocated to the state of Wyoming for six months to be closer to one of their grandchildren pursuing trade school. Family meant everything to Jerry; he looked forward to annual Labor Day gatherings and camping trips with extended family, where laughter and joy were always present.
Known for his sense of humor and playful spirit, Jerry had a unique ability to bring joy to any gathering, often making everyone laugh with his lighthearted antics. He truly embodied the spirit of friendship and generosity, always ready to lend a helping hand.
Jerry is survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Karen Sitzer of Baldwin; and their three children: Erica (Chris) Moore of Grand Haven, Bridget Sitzer of Muskegon, and Trever Andersen (Dawn Lawrence) of Roosevelt Park; six beloved grandchildren: A.J. and Brandon Ledyard, Kiersten, Brayden, and Bryce Moore, and Lauren Andersen; brother-in-law, Jeff (Paula) Vollmer; sister-in-law, Cheryl (Jim) Quebbeman; close friends, Pat and Nancy Corbett; several nieces and nephews; and many cherished friends and family members.
He was preceded in death by his brothers: Roger, Ron, and Larry Sitzer; and sister, Shirley Derosha.
Jerry will be dearly missed, but fondly remembered for his warmth, humor, and the countless memories he created with those who were fortunate to know him.
The Memorial Service for Jerry will take place at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, October 14, 2024, at Hope Church (14932 Mercury Dr., Grand Haven), with Pastor Tim Taylor officiating. Visitations will be held on Sunday, October 13, from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. at Klaassen Family Funeral Home (1500 Robbins Rd., Grand Haven), as well as one hour prior to the service on Monday at the church.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Victor Gouveia Foundation: 14761 Park Ave., Grand Haven, MI 49417. This foundation was chosen as Jerry enjoyed spending time helping with the Silent Auction at the annual benefit and supporting the trades. This foundation is in partnership with the Careerline Tech Center and the proceeds go towards providing the youth of our local community scholarship opportunities, for those entering into the auto body and or auto mechanic trades.
Rest in peace, Sitz. Your laughter and love will forever echo in our hearts.
