James “Jim” J. McHugh, age 95 of Spring Lake, passed away on Saturday, February 27, 2020 at Heartwood Lodge. He was born on April 25, 1925 in Springfield, OH to the late Joseph A. and Mary (McEnaney) McHugh. Jim married Jeannie Keenan on September 17, 1949 in Columbus, OH, and she preceded him in death on March 22, 2017 after 67 years of marriage.
Jim was raised in Springfield, OH and graduated from St. Joseph High School, Class of 1943. He then proudly served his country in the US Navy from 1943 to 1946, during WWII. Upon his discharge from the Navy, Jim returned home and started college at Ohio State University, where he met his wife, Jeannie. He graduated in 1950 with his bachelor’s degree and began working for 3M Company. Jim was then transferred to Atlanta, GA where he spent the next 22 years working, and then settling in Spring Lake, MI in 1972, where he retired from his sales career. He traveled extensively around the United States throughout his career.
Jim was a member of the American Legion for several years and the Elks Club. He enjoyed spending his time with his wife and children. In his retirement he enjoyed feeding and tending to birds and other wildlife.
He is survived by his daughter, Patty (Doug) Jones of Hixson, TN; his son, Tim McHugh of Dayton, OH; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and his brother, John McHugh.
Jim was preceded in death by his wife, Jeanne; son, Mike McHugh; brothers, Joe and Bill McHugh; and his twin sister, Mary McHugh.
The Funeral Mass for Jim will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, March 2, 2021 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church (Spring Lake) with Fr. David Gross Officiating. Masks and Social Distancing will be required at the service. Full military honors will be provided by the American Legion, Charles A. Conklin Post #28.
