James "Jim" Green Obituary

James “Jim” Michael Green, age 71 of Grand Haven, passed away on Friday, July 29, 2022. He was born on August 7, 1950 in Chicago, IL to the late Thomas and Julie (Simon) Green. He married the love of his life and best friend, Jean Olson, on May 15, 1971 in Sister Bay, Wisconsin. They were married for 51 years before her passing on August 20, 2022.

After Jim graduated from high school, he enlisted in the United States Coast Guard. He proudly served his country for over 21 years, from 1967 to 1989, retiring as Chief Boatswain’s Mate.

Throughout the years of his Coast Guard service, Jim’s assignments took him around the country and beyond its borders, though the majority of his time was served on the Great Lakes.

In 1985, Jim received his orders to assume command of Coast Guard Station-Grand Haven. He supervised the local station over nearly four years of search and rescue, law enforcement, Coast Guard Festivals, and power-boat races. His last assignment was assisting in the transfer of the old North Shore station to the new multi-mission station on Harbor Ave.

Jim was a member of St. Patrick – St. Anthony’s Catholic Parish for many years, and following his retirement from the US Coast Guard in May of 1989, he began his new career in the civilian world which eventually brought him to work for the church for a number of years, and later, with the Grand Haven Public School System at the Aquatic Center.

Jim loved any activity he could include his dogs in, and especially enjoyed time spent with family. He also loved fishing, travel, trains, music, and amateur radio.

James is survived by his four sons, Jonathon Green, Jeffrey (Wendy) Green, Jeremy (Lindsay) Green, and Joseph (Angela) Green; his eight beloved grandchildren, Jennifer Taylor, Taylor Conner, Shelby Green, Maverick Green, Ava Green, Drake Green, Gavin Green, and Callum Green; his great-grandson, Grayson Taylor; and two brothers, Thomas and Todd Green.
