James "Dave" David Heiss, age 84 of Grand Haven, passed away in the early morning hours on Wednesday, July 20, 2022 at home, with his family by his side. Dave was born on October 21, 1937 in Flint, MI to the late John and Irene (Bradford) Heiss.
Dave graduated from Flint High School and then married Mary Sandra Stemm in May of 1960 in Flint. In 1972, he moved his family to Grand Haven to start a landscape maintenance business after 15 years as a golf course superintendent.
Dave was a founding member of the (MTF) Michigan Turfgrass Foundation and (MiSTMA) Michigan Sports Turf Managers Association. He was also a private pilot who served on the air park board, and was active at the Grand Haven Ski Bowl. He and Sandy were active in the classic wooden boat community and were frequent volunteers at the Les Cheneaux Antique and Wooden Boat Show.
Dave is lovingly remembered and missed by his wife of 62 years, Sandy; his daughters, Amy (Sean) Bagalay and Marti (Chris) Cramer, all of Grand Haven; son, Matt Heiss of Grand Haven; grandchildren, Nicholas, Mary, Cole, Dylan, and Macayla; four great-grandchildren; and brother, Brad Heiss.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, John and Robert Heiss.
A Memorial Visitation for Dave will be held on Sunday, July 31, 2022, from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. at Klaassen Family Funeral Home.
Interment will be at Grand Haven Township Lakeshore Cemetery.
