Helen June (McDonald) Slaughter

Helen June Slaughter, age 92 of Spring Lake, passed away on Monday, January 9, 2023 at Trinity Health Muskegon Hospital. She was born on December 27, 1930 to the late Standish and Amanda (Anderson) McDonald. Helen married William John Slaughter in 1953 in Indiana. He preceded her in death on August 23, 2013.

Helen graduated from Fremont High School and went on to obtain her Bachelor’s degree in Education from Western Michigan University. She started out her career teaching Physical Education at Hart Public Schools, later teaching elementary school at Fruitport Public School.

Helen loved reading, biking, taking walks, and going for car rides. She will be remembered fondly by her family, former students, and colleagues.

Helen is lovingly remembered and missed by her two sons, Kurt (Lori) Slaughter of Fenton, MI, and Scott Slaughter of Kentwood, MI; her two grandchildren, Adam (Laura) Slaughter and Katie Slaughter; five great-grandchildren: Justin, Trevor, Tyler, Layla, and Libby; and her sister-in-law, Imogene Rega.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William; sisters, Ruth Ellis and Mildred Marchello, and brothers, Don and Douglas McDonald.

Private family services will be held.

Interment will be at St. Bartholomew Cemetery in Newaygo.
