Harriet Van Oordt Obituary

Harriet Jean Van Oordt, age 88, of Robinson Township, passed away on Wednesday, January 22, 2025, at Grand Pines Assisted Living Center. She was born on May 16, 1936, in Spring Lake, MI, to Johann and Annie (Wierenga) DeYoung. Jean married Donald Lee Van Oordt on July 22, 1955, in Spring Lake. He preceded her in death on February 23, 2022, after 66 years of marriage.

Jean graduated from West Michigan Christian High School. She cared for many children in her home daycare, worked at her favorite shop in downtown Grand Haven, Whims and Wishes, and was the bookkeeper for her husband's business, Van Oordt Builders, for many years.

Jean attended First Christian Reformed Church (First Church Grand Haven) and enjoyed traveling with her husband overseas to many locations including Hawaii, China, Greece, The Netherlands, and Israel. She also loved the time spent surrounded by her kids and grandkids, be it a holiday or a regular day; especially sitting by the campfire with her family at her sons' cabin up north.

Jean will be lovingly remembered and missed by her daughter, Andrea (Marty) Karish; three sons: Steven (Amy), James, and Vincent (Lisa) Van Oordt; grandchildren: Joseph Karish, Kailin Van Oordt, Breana Karish (Luis Ramirez), Alex Van Oordt, Skylar Karish, Levi Karish, and Jaspere Karish; four great-grandchildren; and several siblings-in-law.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Don; and sisters, Margaret Ann Diephouse and Edna Suchecki.

Private family services will be held at a later date.

Memorial Contributions may be made to First Church Grand Haven.
