Harold Raymond Merz

Harold Raymond Merz, age 75 of Grand Haven, passed away on Thursday, December 31, 2020 at Heartwood Lodge. He was born on September 11, 1945 in Grand Haven, MI to the late Lloyd and Geraldine (Pierce) Merz. Harold married Gail Achterhof on July 22, 1967 in Grand Haven, MI.

Harold graduated from Grand Haven High School and went on to receive his Bachelor’s degree in sales, working for Lake Welding his entire career. He was a life-long resident of Grand Haven, and member of the United Methodist Church of the Dunes, where he was involved with the “Old Fogies” and “Romeo’s” groups. In addition to his church groups, Harold was also involved with the Boy Scouts of America for several years as a valued Boy Scout Leader.

Harold loved to fish on Rice Lake in Canada, and he and Gail enjoyed traveling to Florida in the colder months. He was a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather to his family who will be remembered and missed dearly.

Harold is survived by his wife of 53 years, Gail Merz of Grand Haven; his daughter, Hilary Merz Bodman; and son, Scott (Kelly) Merz, all of Grand Haven; four beloved grandchildren, Dalton Merz, Jared Whipple, Hayley Bodman, and Abrial Merz; and one great-grandson, Karson Merz.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and parents-in-law, Harold and Norma Achterhof.

A Memorial Service for Harold will be held at a later date to be announced.

Memorial Contributions may be made to United Methodist Church of the Dunes for their Mission Projects.
