Gary Micheal Ballast, age 82, of Spring Lake, passed away on Thursday, October 23, 2025, at his home. He was born on October 13, 1943, in Lockhart, TX, to Henry and Flora (Fox) Ballast. Gary grew up in Grand Haven, MI, attending Grand Haven Public Schools. He married Beverly Noordhof of Muskegon on October 19, 1962, and had three children, eventually settling in Spring Lake, MI. Gary married Doris "Jeannie" Workman on April 28, 1980, and they cherished 18 years of marriage before her passing in 1998.
Gary proudly served his country in the United States Navy from 1960 to 1967, honorably serving on the USS Enterprise aircraft carrier. He was a proud member of the American Legion, Charles A. Conklin Post 28 of Grand Haven and the VFW 3195 of Norton Shores, MI. After his military service, he enjoyed a 31-year career as a dedicated UPS driver and member of the Teamsters.
Gary had a lifelong love for the water, and he could often be found boating throughout the Grand Haven area. He cherished trips in his motorhome spent at North Shore Estates, especially when family would visit. Gary also had a passion for "all things new," especially cars, owning over 115 throughout his life. He also loved to read and for many years enjoyed time spent on the golf course with friends and family.
Gary is survived by his three children: Gera (Christopher) Peel, Todd (Michelle) Ballast, and Rachelle (Tyler) Bierod; grandchildren: Chezney (Chad) Parker, Saebryn Peel, Abigail Ballast, Isabella Bierod, Noah Bierod, and Elijah Bierod; great-grandchildren, Callan and Rove Parker; his sister, Sherry (Hugh) Whiting; and niece, Kristin (Mike) Voinovich. He was preceded in death by his parents; and his second wife, Jeannie.
A private family service for Gary will be held at a later date. Interment will be at Floral View Memorial Gardens with his wife, Jeannie.
