Florine "Flo" Sluiter Obituary

Florine June Sluiter, age 95 of Grand Haven, passed away on Tuesday, May 12, 2020 at Grand Pines Assisted Living Center. She was born on March 11, 1925 in Holland, MI to the late Gerrit and Margaret (Scheerhorn) Topp. Flo married her high school sweetheart, Robert (Bob) Hugh Sluiter, on September 27, 1947 in Detroit, MI.

They moved to Chicago while Bob finished his optometric degree at Northern Illinois College of Optometry and she worked for the Internal Revenue Service as a bookkeeper. Upon his graduation, Flo and Bob moved to Grand Haven in 1951. They built a beautiful life in Grand Haven, raising three children and developing a successful optometric business, wherein Flo was his receptionist for the last 10 years of the practice.

Flo served as an auxiliary member of the West Michigan Optometric Association, and was an active member of First Presbyterian Church and its choir since 1952. Music played a prominent role in Flo’s personal and family life and she loved big band and classical music, show tunes, and musicals. She loved introducing this love of music to her grandchildren and delighted in watching them dance and sing along with the tunes.

Flo was an avid golfer and former member of the Spring Lake Country Club. In her prime, Flo was known to outdrive many men from the tee. She also enjoyed bowling, tennis, and ceramic classes. To know Flo was to know a person of great caring, determination, selfless love, nurturing, generosity, and strength. She was small in stature, but mighty in heart. Those who knew Flo know the impact she made on countless lives. To Flo, everybody was special and she made you feel important no matter your relationship. It’s difficult to envision a world without such a wonderful woman. She was happiest when surrounded by her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and loved a good party filled with love, laughter, and delicious food with lots of chocolate desserts!

Flo will be missed by her immediate family, her Grand Pines family, close friends, extended family, and members of the community. We would like to give a heartfelt thank you to the amazing staff at Grand Pines. She loved you and you all became her bonus family.

Florine will be lovingly remembered by her children and their spouses: Linda (Dale) Cox, Sand Springs, OK,  Nancy (Phillip) Law, Grand Haven, MI,  David (Melodie Reagan) Sluiter, Superior, CO; grandchildren, Eric (Terri) Law, Erica (Roger) Clark, Mathew Robert Sluiter, and Tegan Elizabeth Sluiter; great-grandchildren, Jacob and Alec Law, and Brody and Samantha Clark; brother, Paul (Peggy) Topp, Yucaipa, CA; sisters-in-law, Ruth and Carol Topp; and dear friends, Suzanne and Greg Lonnee, and Bill Collison.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Bob Sluiter; brother, Junior Gerrit Topp; brother and sister-in-law, Harold and Norma Topp; and brother, Don Lee Topp.

The Memorial Service for Florine will be at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, June 11, 2021 at First Presbyterian Church with Pastor Troy Hauser Brydon officiating. Interment will be at Lake Forest Cemetery.
