Florence Dorn Obituary

Florence Taylor Dorn, age 92 of Grand Haven, passed away peacefully in her sleep, on Friday, February 5, 2021 at Heartwood Lodge in Spring Lake, MI. She was born on October 3, 1928 in Salmon Cove, Newfoundland, Canada to Herbert and Bessie May (Parsons) Case. Florence married Oscar Dorn on June 2, 1959, at Gower Street United Methodist Church, and he preceded her in death on April 7, 2005 after 46 years of marriage.

Florence completed her studies at Prince of Wales Collegiate, and she worked in St Johns, Newfoundland as a bookkeeper. Upon moving to Grand Haven, she worked for WGHN in the office for some time. After this, she raised her children and kept the most exceptionally clean home and yard.

Florence was a member of the United Methodist Church of the Dunes, where she was a Sunday school teacher, and would later serve in the Stephens Ministry. Upon moving into the Robbins Nest Apartment community, she helped to start a coffee group which she named, “The Robbins Nesters.” Florence was an avid knitter and provided many with her warm and cozy socks, and afghans. She enjoyed going to yard sales, and mostly loved to play scrabble. It was a rare occasion that she lost. Florence enjoyed life and the many friendships she made while living at Robbins Nest.

Florence is lovingly remembered and greatly missed by her daughter, Joanne (John) Mitchell of Norton Shores, MI; son, John Dorn of Toledo, OH; grandchildren: Andrea, Joshua, Derek, and Benjamin; one great-grandson, Mason; sister, Barbara Price; and sisters-in-law, Arlene Dorn, Pat Dorn, Elaine Dorn, Edith Dorn, Eva Gift, and Lou Case.

She was preceded in death by her husband; three sisters, Marjorie, Mabel and Dorothy; brother, James Case; sisters-in-law, Verna Garbrecht, Doris DeBryun, and Viola Snyder; brothers- in-law, Samuel Johnson, Levi Wells, Ted Price, and Arnold, Marvin, Edward, Alfred, and Albert Dorn.

In accordance with Florence’s wishes, a private family graveside service will take place at the United Methodist Church of the Dunes Memorial Garden.

Memorial Contributions can be made to the United Methodist Church of the Dunes or Hospice of North Ottawa Community.
