Elwood “Woody” J. Bishop, age 87 of Grand Haven, passed away on Tuesday, February 13, 2024, at home. Woody was born on October 1, 1936, in Grand Haven, MI, to the late Harry and Jeanette (Koetsier) Bishop. He married Mary Dawes on August 17, 1957, in Grand Haven.
Woody graduated from Grand Haven High School and was a lifelong resident of the area. He was co-owner and operator of Wessel’s Tire and Auto for 49 years with his son, Richard.
Woody was an avid sports fan who loved the Detroit Lions and U of M football, and Detroit Tigers baseball. For the last 20 years, he and Mary enjoyed traveling together and spending time at their home in Florida in the winter months.
Woody will be forever remembered and missed by his beloved wife of 66 years, Mary; and their four sons: David (Lori) Bishop of North Muskegon, Richard “Dick” (Dottie) Bishop of Grand Haven, Dale (Tina) Bishop of Grandville, and Dan (Linda) Bishop of Tampa, FL; 13 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; sister, Wilma Reenders; brother, Gary (Mary) Bishop; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Harry Bishop; and three sisters: Luella (Bill) Laning, Eleanor (Joseph) Kiebach, and Shirley (Melvin) Wiltenberg.
The Memorial Service for Woody will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, April 12, 2024, at Klaassen Family Funeral Home, with Pastor Larry Hubley officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
Interment will be at Lake Forest Cemetery.
Memorial Contributions may be made to the American Alzheimer's Association-Michigan Chapter 090, Grand Haven Area Community Foundation, or Corewell Health Foundation-Hospice.
