Ellen M. (McNally) O'Brien

Ellen Marie O'Brien, age 70, of Grand Haven, passed away on Wednesday, March 27, 2025.  She was born on September 2, 1954, to Robert and Mary Jane (Flanders) McNally in Columbus, OH. 

Ellen attended Ottawa Hills High School in Grand Rapids, MI, graduating in 1972. She went on to attend Western Michigan University where she earned her Bachelor's degree in Education, later, attending Michigan State University where she earned her Master's degree in Special Education. Ellen met her husband, Jim O'Brien, while living in South Bend, IN. They were married on August 12, 1978, and they later relocated to Grand Haven, MI. 

Ellen started her career as a Special Education Teacher at Grand Haven High School which she did until her retirement. She had a passion for teaching and helping others leaving a lasting impression on everyone she met.  

Throughout the years, Ellen enjoyed conversing with people, spending time with her grandchildren, and reading.  

Ellen is survived by her two children, Emma (Justin) Neuberger and Patrick (Nicole) O'Brien; her step-daughter, Kelly (Don) Korjenek; grandchildren: Tyler, Olive, and Rory; step-grandchildren: Joseph, John, and Jamie; siblings: Robert, Thomas, and Mary Jane; and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 44 years, Jim; and her parents, Mary Jane and Robert.

A Mass of Christian Burial for Ellen will take place at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, April 2, 2025, at St. Patrick - St. Anthony Catholic Parish in Grand Haven, with Fr. Dan Schumaker officiating. Interment will be at Lake Forest Cemetery.
