Eleanor “Ellie” Reid Kelly, age 82 of Spring Lake, passed away on Wednesday, June 8, 2022 at a local care facility. She was born on May 15, 1940 in Providence, RI to the late Owen and Catherine (Quinn) Reid. Ellie married John L. Kelly on June 27, 1964 in Middletown, RI.
After her graduation from High School, Eleanor graduated from Marymount College, now Fordham University, with her degree in English. She taught in Rhode Island for a few years. John and Ellie then moved with their family to Michigan in 1975. Ellie devoted many years to raising her family. Later she worked for Grand Haven Public Schools as a Reading Aide for Chapter One.
Eleanor was an active and faithful member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church for many years, and enjoyed serving on the funeral lunch committee at church. She was also a member of the Spring Lake Country Club, and was an avid gardener who enjoyed playing tennis in her younger years, and reading and knitting in her free time.
Eleanor is lovingly remembered and missed by her husband of 58 years, John; her three daughters, Erin Kelly of South Bend, IN, Catherine (Dan) Caughey of Alexandria, VA, and Beth Thomas of Prior Lake, MN; two sons, Sean (Kniffen) Kelly of Milton, GA and Brian (Heather) Kelly of Grand Haven, MI; grandchildren: Emersen and Regan Thomas, Griffin, Colin, Amelia, John Ryan, and Brynn Kelly, Jillian, Ryan, and Lauren Caughey; brothers, Phil Reid, and John (Susanne) Reid; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her sisters-in-law, Mary Kathryn Sullivan and Dorothy Arruda; and her brother-in-law, Vincent Kelly.
The Memorial Mass for Eleanor will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 14, 2022 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with Fr. Norm Droski officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be at Spring Lake Township Cemetery.
