Effie Mae Van Tol, age 85 of Grand Haven, passed away on Thursday, September 7, 2023 at home. She was born on September 23, 1937 in Spring Lake, MI to the late Ray and Marian (Vanden Bosch) VanderZwaag. Effie married Paul L. Van Tol on May 4, 1956 at her home in Nunica.
Effie graduated from Grand Haven High School and was a lifelong resident of the Tri-Cities area. She worked as a Co-Manager of River Haven Mobile Home Community for many years, having worked for Grand Haven Area Public Schools Community Education prior to this. She also held a position at Spring Lake State Bank early in her working years.
Effie was a member of Second Reformed Church where she served as a Sunday School teacher, elder, and choir member. While in the church choir, she enjoyed singing many duets with Char Kooi. Effie volunteered her time with Love in Action, visiting those who were homebound and shut-ins.
Effie loved going for car rides, attending sporting events, playing cards, and riding her bike. She very much enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, and spent as much time with them as she could.
Effie is lovingly remembered and missed by her beloved husband of 67 years, Paul; and their three sons: Jeff “Jethro” (Dianna) Van Tol of Grand Haven, Jim (Laurice) Van Tol also of Grand Haven, and Jon Van Tol (Mitzi Montgomary) of Grand Haven; three grandchildren: Tucker (Erin) Van Tol, LeiLei Van Tol, and Justin (Emily) Van Tol; eight great-grandchildren: Gertje, Windan, Guilli, Marvjane, Ilse, Braydan, Booker, and Blakely Van Tol; brother, Robert (Linda) VanderZwaag of Grand Rapids; brother-in-law, Al DeWitt; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her grandson, Jason Paul Van Tol; sisters-in-law, Marlene DeWitt and Judy VanderZwaag; and her brother-in-law, Donn (Nieta) DeYoung.
The Memorial Service for Effie will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, September 12, 2023 at Second Reformed Church with Pastor Mike VanKampen officiating. Visitation will be held on Monday, September 11th, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Klaassen Family Funeral Home. Interment will be at Lake Forest Cemetery.
