Obituary

Edward Allen Schmeltzer “Ozzie,” age 93, lifelong resident of Grand Haven, passed away on Wednesday, August 23, 2023. He was born on February 21, 1930 in Grand Haven, MI to Edward and Anna (Borring) Schmeltzer. Edward married Charlene Walters on October 31, 1959 in Grand Haven. She preceded him in death on November 9, 2017, after 58 years of marriage.

Edward attended Grand Haven Area Public Schools where he played football. Following high school, he traveled west and worked for Boeing, then returning to Grand Haven and working at Bastian Blessing as a sheet metal worker. He later attended Muskegon Community College for Business, and then worked for Grand Haven Public Schools.

Edward loved sports and went on to win a state championship coaching the “Boeve Comets” Class-C slow pitch softball team with his wife and daughter. He was an avid Notre Dame fan and continued to support them through his later years.

Edward will be greatly missed by his daughter, Deborah Schmeltzer of Snowflake, Arizona; son, Michael (Julie) Schmeltzer of Grand Haven; four grandchildren: Allie (Ben) Visser, Joy (Tim) Creighton, Caleb Schmeltzer, and Marina (Brad) Bisdorf; and three great-grandchildren: Lucille Creighton, Josephine Visser, and Julian Visser.

A private family gathering will be held.
