Duane “Butch” Rose Obituary

Duane “Butch” Rose, age 80, of Grand Haven, passed away Tuesday, May 7, 2024, at home. He was born March 8, 1944, in Muskegon, to the late Ardie and Nina (Henagin) Rose. Butch married Joanne Cech on July 27, 1984, in Grand Haven. He had many fond memories of his polka dance romance with Joanne. She preceded him in death on July 28, 2020, after 36 years of marriage.

Butch attended Ravenna High School and was a resident of Grand Haven most of his life. Butch proudly served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War Era, from 1961 to 1964. Upon his discharge from the Army, he was employed with several manufacturing companies throughout the years.

He was a member of the American Legion Charles A. Conklin Post 28 and the Grand Haven Eagles Aerie 925. Throughout the years, Butch stayed active with his many passions including photography, faithfully charting all the birds he observed, building and selling birdhouses, and painting nature scenes.

He was also an avid bass fisherman, receiving many trophies in tournaments. Butch was especially proud of working on his home farm, growing vegetables to sell at his roadside stand, splitting and selling firewood, and most importantly, running his garlic farm (which was the largest in Michigan).

Butch will be lovingly remembered by his daughters: Amie Yowell-Bursley of Bangor, MI and Bridget Apple of Katy, TX; five grandchildren: Chaylynn and Devin Bursley, Grace, Miriam and Charles Apple; two great-grandchildren: Micah Bursley and Rowen Williams; sister, Juanita Rose Dallman; brother, Fred Rose; as well as numerous nieces and nephews; and daughters, Sharon Estell, and Doreen Rose-Trierweiler.

In addition to his wife, Butch was also preceded in death by his parents; sister, Myna Dawn LaRue; two brothers, Ron and Clair Rose; and special friend, Cody Maatman.

A Graveside Service for Butch will take place at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 25, 2024, at Grand Haven Township Historic Cemetery. Full Military Honors will be provided by the American Legion, Charles A. Conklin Post 28.

In lieu of flowers, Memorial Contributions may be made to Harbor Humane Society or the American Legion, Charles A. Conklin Post 28.
