Douglas Carl VanderWall, age 80 of Grand Haven, passed away on Saturday, February 4, 2023 at Trinity Health Muskegon Hospital, after a brief illness. He was born on October 17, 1942 in Muskegon, MI to the late Marvin and Ruth (Wentzloff) VanderWall. Doug married Tina Maycroft on August 11, 1984 in Grand Haven.
Doug graduated from Grand Haven High School in 1961, and then Central Michigan University, where he obtained his bachelor’s degree in education and lettered in Baseball. He taught Physical Education at Fruitport Community Schools for 30 years, from 1966 to 1996, and served as a basketball coach for most of those years.
Doug was inducted into the Muskegon Area Sports Hall of Fame in 2003 as a member of the 1960-1961 Grand Haven High School Baseball Team, where they earned the State Record for achieving 56 consecutive wins. Doug was also inducted into the Grand Haven Hall of Fame in 2008, and again in 2016 for Athletic Achievement. The last team Doug coached was the Fruitport Trojans Junior Varsity Basketball Team of 1995-1996, which still held a special place in his heart. For over 50 years, Doug was the committed clock operator at the Fruitport Football games. In 1986, Doug was the Grand Haven Golf Club Champion, and he was also a member of the Michigan Sports Sages, Class of 1994.
Doug was a long time member of First Presbyterian Church of Grand Haven, where he also served as deacon. He will be remembered fondly by so many who he crossed paths with over the years.
Doug is lovingly remembered and missed by his beloved wife of 38 years, Tina; his daughter, Charlotte (Tim) Zuiderveen; and sons, Clay (Coryn) VanderWall and Tyler (Emma Quinn) VanderWall; three grandchildren, Ian, Elle, and Evan VanderWall; his brothers, Wayne VanderWall and Bruce (Patricia) VanderWall; sisters, Jan Zier and Allyson (Jim) Howard; his mother-in-law, Donna (Paul) Schipper; sister-in-law, Brenda (Andy Zukowski) Maycroft; brothers-in-law, Brad (Deanna) Maycroft and Brian (Kathy) Maycroft; and several nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family members. He was preceded in death by his parents; his step-mother, Clavera VanderWall; and father-in-law, Donald Maycroft.
The Memorial Service for Doug will take place at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, May 26, 2023 at First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Dr. Troy Hauser Brydon officiating, followed by a reception at the Trillium Event Center in Spring Lake.
