Dorothy R. Jullie, age 92 of Grand Haven, passed away on Tuesday, November 9, 2021. She was born on August 26, 1929 in Grand Haven, MI to James and Amelia (Farmer) VanderZalm. On February 27, 1960, she married Dr. Lawrence A. Jullie (Doc) in Grand Haven, and he preceded her in death on June 17, 2018.
Dorothy was a caring wife, mother, grandma, and great-grandma. Early in her life, Dorothy (Dort) was a kindergarten school teacher in Spring Lake. This explains why she found great pleasure in anything that challenged her mind, such as reading piles of magazines that arrived frequently. She loved the crossword puzzles, even though completing them often involved cheating a bit using the dictionary, the internet, or phoning a friend.
Watching Jeopardy with Alex Trebek was a source of amusement. “What’s the capital of Albania for $1,000?” Dort loved getting the answer right before anyone else in the room could blurt it out.
Piano playing was a lifelong passion. She played most everything out of her head as long as it was written in flats. If there were sharps, she would eliminate them.
Dort loved to swim at the Y.M.C.A. She and Doc would swim there daily until they went to their winter home in Venice, Florida, which they enjoyed for many years.
Her granddaughters were a huge source of joy. She loved keeping a supply of candy bars for them in a place only known to them.
Dorothy is survived by her two sons, Jeff (Kelli) Jullie of Grand Haven, and Mark (Rob) Jullie of Chicago. She adored her four grandchildren: Dr. Alissa (Wayne) Enzenberger, Jamie (Chris) Waite, Anna Jullie, and Brittany Jullie; and her precious great-grandchildren, Theo and Madison Enzenberger. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, James VanderZalm; and sisters, Ida Nieuwkoop, Ethel Kozak, Margaret Long, and Marie Brigance.
Dorothy’s family would like to thank the staff at Grand Pines Assisted Living for their wonderful care.
The Funeral Service for Dorothy will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, November 15, 2021 at Klaassen Family Funeral Home with Pastor John Koedyker officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Interment will be at Lake Forest Cemetery.
Memorial Contributions may be made to First Presbyterian Church- Deacon Fund, or the Tri-Cities Y.M.C.A.
