Donald Weesies Obituary

Donald Gene Weesies, age 87 of Grand Haven, passed away on Thursday, May 27, 2021 at Heartwood Lodge. He was born on April 17, 1934 in Montague, MI to the late Claude and Jantina (Newmyer) Weesies. Donald married June Kool on March 15, 1956 in Grand Haven, MI.

Upon finishing high school, Don proudly served his country in the US Army from 1954 to 1955. He worked at DeYoung Oil, followed by DeYoung Builders, and began his career as a draftsman for Rycenga Homes, where he was employed for 30 years.

Don was an active member of Second Christian Reformed Church where he formerly served as Deacon. He spent many years building several new homes and apartments, and also volunteered many hours on the additions to Second Christian Reformed Church and Grand Haven Christian School. Don also enjoyed serving his community by volunteering for Habitat for Humanity and making sports banners for Western Michigan Christian school gymnasium.

He loved sports, especially basketball and baseball, and attended many of his kids and grandkid’s games.

Don is survived by his wife of 65 years, June Weesies of Grand Haven; his three sons, Scot (Linda) Weesies of Gulf Port, FL, Brent (Lori) Weesies of Caledonia, MI, and Todd Weesies of Grand Rapids, MI; his four grandchildren, Jennifer (Brandon) Couture, Jessica (Kyle) Rider, Chad (Leah) Weesies, and Jack Weesies; great-grandchildren: Logan & Blakely Couture, and Jamison, Emilia, and Theodore Rider. Also surviving are his three sisters, Charlotte Betten of Grand Rapids, Ellen Johnson of Montague, and Fran Weerstra of Spring Lake; two brothers, David (Barb) Weesies and Kenneth Weesies; and in-laws: Jerry, John, Tom, and David Kool, and Madge Jerovsek, Mary Hall, and Cherri Deur.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Calvin Weesies.
