David Horton Obituary

David Roger Horton, age 76 of Grand Haven, passed away on Wednesday, July 22, 2020 in Holland, MI. He was born on December 6, 1943 in Grand Haven, MI to the late Westley and Lucille (Reynolds) Horton. David married Cheryl Bates on May 23, 1970 in Grand Haven.

David graduated in 1962 from Grand Haven High School where he played on the high school football team. He was born and raised in Grand Haven, and after spending several years living in Colorado, he and Cheryl returned home to Michigan. David and Cheryl joined Hope Reformed Church in 2011, where David enjoyed greeting people at the door and helping with the offering. David proudly served his country in the US Army as a flight mechanic from 1962 to 1965, during the Vietnam War Era.

David started his own welding company, Daton Enterprises, in the early 1970’s.  After selling the business in 1982, he and Cheryl briefly owned the Grand Haven Home Bakery.  He eventually went on to become the Maintenance Manager at Finish Corp. While living in Colorado he was the Building and Grounds Supervisor for YMCA of the Rockies.

David was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed camping with his family and friends, bow-hunting, mountain-biking, running, and rollerblading. Early in their marriage, he and Cheryl enjoyed many off-road adventures and trips to Mackinac Island were an annual get-away.  Cheryl introduced David to cross-country skiing early in their marriage. After conquering that sport, downhill skiing came next for the entire family.

David could take apart and fix just about anything, especially if it had a motor. He gave 110% attention and focus to everything he did.  He will be remembered and missed by so many.

David is survived by his wife of 50 years, Cheryl; daughter, Holly (William) Schultz of Zeeland; son, Doug (Amy) Horton of Tabernash, CO; granddaughter, Cyan Rose Stevens; three step-grandchildren: Brandon, Alicia, and Nate Schultz; step great-grandchild, Maylie Lippert; brother, Westley (Elizabeth) Horton of Round Rock, TX; in-laws, Ken (Sharyn) Westerhouse and John (Jackie) Bates, all of Grand Haven; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, and parents-in-law.

A Drive-In Memorial Service for David will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, July 27, 2020 at Hope Reformed Church with Pastor Tim Taylor officiating. A Drive-By Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church. All those attending will be required to stay in their vehicles during the visitation and service.  The service will be streamed live on the Hope Reformed Church Facebook page as well.

Memorial Contributions may be made to The Association for Frontotemporal Degeneration, Hope Reformed Church, or Hospice of North Ottawa Community.
