Charles Robert Frutig, affectionately known as "Charlie," passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, December 19, 2024, surrounded by his family, at the age of 85. He was born on September 10, 1939, in Indianapolis, Indiana, and grew up in Sandusky, Ohio.
Charlie was a man of many passions, including sailing, fishing, gardening, and birding. He found joy in spending time outdoors, particularly on the water, where he felt most at peace. His love for nature was equaled only by the love he had for his family and his cherished dogs. He was especially known for his famous Old Fashioned's, which were enjoyed by all who loved him.
A proud graduate of The Ohio State University, Charlie remained a dedicated OSU fan throughout his life. His journey was defined by a love for adventure and an unwavering devotion to the people he loved.
Charlie and his wife, Shari (Smith) Frutig, shared a special connection that began when they first met as teenagers sailing on Lake Erie. Their paths crossed again at Ohio State, where Charlie worked as a busboy at Kappa Kappa Gamma. Their love flourished, and they married in 1962. They celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary on December 15, just days before his passing.
In 1978, Charlie accepted a position with Grand Haven Brass Foundry, prompting the family to relocate to Spring Lake, Michigan, where they continued to build a life full of love and cherished memories.
Charlie was a dedicated member of his community, serving as president of Grand Haven Rotary, Commodore of Spring Lake Yacht Club, and as a member of the Ferrysburg City Council and Board of Review. He also served on the Vestry of St. John's Episcopal Church, and was an active participant in the choirs of both Grand Haven Presbyterian Church and St. John's Episcopal Church.
Charlie is survived by his beloved wife, Shari; daughters: Caren (Fritz) Hatton, Amy (Gray) Robertson, and Jill (Tim) Parker; as well as his sister, Susan (Bruce) Barniker. He was the proud grandfather of Libby and Hattie Hatton, Kate and McKeathan Robertson, and Charlie and Aidan Parker. He was also a cherished uncle to many nieces and nephews.
A Memorial Service celebrating Charlie's life will take place at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 26, 2024, at St. John's Episcopal Church in Grand Haven, with Rev. Dr. Jared C. Cramer officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church, with a reception to follow at the church.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests Memorial Contributions be made to the Spring Lake Yacht Club Junior Sailing Association, St. John's Episcopal Church, or Corewell Health Hospice.
Charlie's legacy of love, kindness, and devotion to his family and passions will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
