Carolyn M. Sturrus, age 92, of Spring Lake, MI, went to be with her Heavenly Father on Saturday, January 10, 2026. She was born on May 9, 1933, in Muskegon, MI, to the late Fred and Andena (Madendorp) Toxopeus.
Carolyn worked at Muskegon Community College for most of her career. She served as an Interim President of the College for two years and as an Executive Assistant to five Presidents there as well. Carolyn also received an Honorary Doctor of Education degree from Aquinas College in 2022.
Carolyn's love of God was her foremost attribute. What her family and friends will miss about her most, however, is the love, care, and wisdom she shared. She loved each one deeply, prayed for each by name, and offered a listening ear on many occasions. She will be missed deeply by those who loved her.
Carolyn is survived by her three children: Duane Sturrus, Cindy (Bruce) Wolffis, and Theresa (Stephen) VanDeWalker; as well as 16 grandchildren with 12 spouses; 20 great-grandchildren; sister, Judith (Jon) Kleeves McLeod; sister-in-law, Margaret Toxopeus; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Robert Iversen; second husband, Peter Sturrus; two sons, Gregory Iversen and Randall Sturrus; as well as her siblings, in-laws, and their spouses: Alan Toxopeus, Fred (Harriett) Toxopeus, Margaret (Alan) Workman, Joyce (Ron) Webb, and Mary (Burton) Tjapkes.
The Memorial Service for Carolyn will take place at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 17, 2026, at Second Christian Reformed Church, with Pastor Tim Blackmon officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church.
In lieu of flowers, Memorial Contributions/love gifts may be given to Carolyn’s favorite charities: Aquinas College, Calvin University, Calvin Theological Seminary, Sturrus Technology Center at Muskegon Community College, or Second Christian Reformed Church (Grand Haven).
